Secondary Roles
Overview
Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) is central to Snowflake security. While users operate under a primary active role, Snowflake provides the concept of Secondary Roles. This feature allows users to perform SQL actions on objects that they have been granted privileges on via any of their granted roles, without needing to constantly switch their active role.
Key Concepts
Primary Role vs. Secondary Roles
- Primary Role: When a user logs in, they have a single *current* or *primary* role (accessible via
CURRENT_ROLE()). By default, all objects created during the session are owned by this primary role.
